The gorges, a breeding sanctuary for birds of prey
A new breeding season for rock birds of prey in the Gorges de l’Ardèche is just around the corner – let’s hope it’s as auspicious as last year’s!
The year 2021 was rich in sightings and successful breeding for Bonelli’s eagles, Egyptian vultures and peregrine falcons.
While the two Bonelli’s eagle pairs only produced one young fledgling, we saw the arrival of a young female of Spanish origin to replace the “old” female who disappeared during the breeding season. A new pair of peregrine falcons was discovered with two young on a new site unknown to ornithologists from the Syndicat de Gestion de la Réserve nationale des Gorges de l’Ardèche (SGGA) and the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux (LPO).
For the third year running, five pairs of Egyptian vultures have taken up residence in the Gorges de l’Ardèche. Four young birds have fledged, including a late migrant observed in Gruissan (Aude) on October 11, 2021!
