Description
Perched high above the Rhône valley on its volcanic neck, Rochemaure castle has still not yielded all its secrets. It was probably built by the Adhémar family from Montélimar between the 11th and 12th centuries. The old village is well worth a visit and offers marvellous views over the river.

Overlooking the Rhône valley from its impressive dungeon, Rochemaure castle is still as fascinating today as ever for everyone. This castle was built by the Adhémar family from Monteil between the 11th and the 12th century. Its remains have still not given up all its mysteries. The fortified castrum from the 12th century, including ramparts and flanking towers that we can still see and the old village are medieval.
We can see chequered black basalt and white limestone’s stones, which are found in lots of villages in our territory.
Geologically, Rochemaure castle was built in a strategic location. Coiron plateau’s basalt and Cruas limestone quarry were used to supply the construction of the castle and the lovely old village. We can admire spectacular views of the Rhône and volcanic landscapes.
