Bivouac in the Ardèche Gorges
The Ardèche Gorges, a Protected Nature Reserve
The Ardèche Gorges, with their exceptional landscapes, fauna and flora, have been classified as a National Nature Reserve since 1980. However grandiose this nature may appear, it is in reality extremely fragile. To limit the impact of tourism in the Gorges de l’Ardèche, unauthorised camping is not permitted. Whether you’re canoeing or hikingdown the Gorges, you’ll need to sleep at one of the 2 bivouac sites at Gaud or Gournier. Places on the bivouac are limited. Make sure you book in advance!
Accommodation at bivouac sites in the Gorges de l’Ardèche
When you arrive at the bivouac, you will be greeted by a park warden. He will tell you what to do with your equipment and where to set up. There are several options for sleeping at the bivouac: you can pitch your own tent, hire a 2-second tent and mattress on site, or book a comfortable cosy tent.
Facilities at bivouac sites in the Gorges de l’Ardèche
Sanitary facilities are available at the 2 bivouac sites in the Gorges de l’Ardèche. You’ll find (cold!) showers, washbasins, toilets and a drinking water point.
As you can see, bivouacking in the Ardèche Gorges is pure nature! Of course, there are no grocery shops or restaurants here. So you’ll need to bring your own food. Barbecues and charcoal are available. Coffee, tea and organic and local fruit juices will be available from the reserve rangers in the morning before you leave.
Compost for your organic waste is available at the bivouac sites. Please avoid plastic packaging as much as possible and take your rubbish with you.
