Those who have already travelled them will tell you that the Ardèche Gorges are fantastic in any season. But in spring, it’s a real apotheosis! To make the most of it, check out our top 10 spring activities in the Ardèche Gorges!

1- Take a walk in the Ardèche Gorges

Spring in the Gorges de l’Ardèche is truly fantastic. The trees are getting fuller by the day, and their different foliage blends into a cameo of green. The flowers add multicoloured touches wherever you look. Butterflies twirl their shimmering colours before our eyes. The river is powerful, translucent and clear. It invites us to take a refreshing dip. It’s calm and serene. All you can hear is the cry of the Bonelli’s eagle, the call of the kidneyshell and the sound of paddles skimming the surface of the water… The Gorges de l’Ardèche are classified as a Nature Reserve, and are one of the most beautiful canyons in Europe. By canoe, on foot, by car… Whatever your preference, there’s something for everyone.

4 – Take part in nature events organised by the Syndicat de Gestion des Gorges de l’Ardèche (Ardèche Gorges Management Association)

The Gorges de l’Ardèche have been classified as a National Nature Reserve since 1980, protecting some 2,000 hectares of wilderness. The Réserve Naturelle des Gorges de l’Ardèche is managed by the Syndicat de Gestion des Gorges de l’Ardèche, which organises its actions around 3 major objectives:

🫶 Protect: Thanks to the implementation of ecological management actions including bat conservation, scientific monitoring and surveillance of the two pairs of Bonneli’s eagles, maintenance of percnopter vulture feeding sites…

🙌 Manage: by ensuring that regulations are applied (monitoring mission), assessing the natural heritage, and carrying out scientific monitoring.

🌱 Raising awareness: by offering educational events for the public. And the programme of FREE (!) events put together by the Ardèche Gorges Nature Guides promises to be fascinating! Follow in the footsteps of bats or beavers, observe vultures through binoculars, draw the landscape at the Dent de Rez, understand the impact of climate change on the river and its animal and plant species, go on a guided hike to discover this wild canyon, learn about the history of human occupation and the cultural remains of the Ardèche Gorges over the last 320,000 years.

7 – Discover the Animal exhibition at Grotte Chauvet 2

Perhaps you’ve already had the chance to visit Grotte Chauvet 2? This is a copy of the original Grotte Chauvet, discovered near Pont d’Arc in 1994 by 3 cavers. It faithfully reproduces the prehistoric frescoes and drawings, as well as the walls, floors, ceilings and archaeological remains of this exceptional site, the oldest testimony to the art of mankind.

As well as the traditional tour, Grotte Chauvet 2 is offering a show entitled “Animal, from Prehistory to Street Art“. It’s an immersive experience with sound and light. An animated fresco enhanced by an original musical composition. In the midst of a colourful bestiary, the spectator wanders through 36,000 years of cave art to contemporary street art.
